FORMER RHINO, MICHAEL RIVERA, TO RETURN HOME TO COACH FOR EL PASO RHINOS

Former Rhinos player, El Paso-born Michael Rivera, will return home to coach for the El Paso Rhinos, as was announced today.

Michael Rivera was raised in El Paso and grew up playing hockey at the El Paso County Events Center.  He played as a forward for the Rhinos team from 2010-2013.  Following his run as a Rhino, Michael attended University of Central Oklahoma, where he played hockey from 2013-2016.  He earned a BS in accounting and an MBA from UCO.

After college, Michael became part of the coaching staff for UCO, serving as Assistant Coach for three season and then Head Coach for five seasons.  Throughout that time, he also worked as a Scout for the Rhinos. Under Rivera’s leadership, UCO accumulated a 113-26 record, back to back to back WCHL Championships, two Final Four Appearances, and a National Championship runner-up.

Rivera will return home to serve as Associate Coach for the Rhinos’ NA3HL Team.  He says, “My family and I are excited and humbled for the opportunity to return to El Paso and coach the Rhinos. It’s truly special to have an eliteorganization in my hometown that I not only played for, but now have the opportunity to coach. I grew up in that rink, and the thought of my daughter doing the same, while having the support of family in our hometown is surreal. I would not have a career in hockey without the Rhinos, and I have a tremendous amount of gratitude to the organization for this. I look forward to carrying on the “Rhino Way” – it has never failed me in my years behind the bench.”

President Corey Heon states that “Adding Mike Rivera to our coaching staff is definitely a boost that is welcomed.  With his proven track record at the College level and relentless passion for the game – his experience and knowledge of the game will only benefit our organization.  I’ve known Michael for years, dating back to when he was a local star and Captain of the Rhinos.  He was a great leader, not only on the ice, but off the ice as well.  He knows what it takes to be a Rhino firsthand.  I look forward to good things to come.”
